FICA, the Fur Information Council of America, was established in 1987 as the Fur Trade Association of the United States. FICA is affiliated with organizations such as the International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF), headquartered in London. Membership has increased steadily over the years and now numbers hundreds of fur retailers, wholesalers, fashion designers, business analysts, and editors throughout the country.
The Hong Kong fur industry dates back to the 1930s when several experienced furriers fled from China to Hong Kong and set up workshops and retail outlets. Initially the trade catered to the increasingly affluent domestic market and later to tourists who found Hong Kong a very advantageous place to buy quality furs.
